Previous Federal Bureau of Investigation chief James Comey has denied the charges to giving untrue testimony to congressional representatives and hindering a legislative process.

Mr Comey's attorney entered the response acting as his counsel in a federal court in Alexandria, Virginia on Wednesday.

His attorney stated he would attempt to have the legal matter dismissed for various causes including that his client, a critic of Donald Trump, was being singled out.

Mr Comey was indicted soon after the former president pressured his chief prosecutor to move forward against him.

Court Developments

In court on mid-week, Comey's lawyer Patrick Fitzgerald informed the judge they aimed to submit multiple legal requests to dismiss the proceedings before a court case, arguing the legal action was spiteful and that a federal prosecutor was wrongfully appointed to take over the legal matter.

The former director's proceedings was originally handled by a Virginia prosecutor, who stepped down under influence from Donald Trump after his probe into another opponent - New York Attorney General Letitia James - failed to file indictments.

Judicial Environment

The former director came across in good spirits as he walked into the courtroom on Wednesday, speaking with his lawyers and making jokes. He was joined by his partner, Mrs Failor and daughter Maureen, a government attorney who the former government dismissed.

Following the reading to the magistrate state his rights and the dual charges against him in the courtroom on mid-week, James Comey was asked if he comprehended the allegations.

"Absolutely your honour. Thank you very much," he informed the judge.

Historical Information

Mr Comey was the chief of the Federal Bureau of Investigation from 2013 to 2017 and was terminated about a few months into Trump's first administration as commander-in-chief. At the time, the director was directing an probe into Russian election interference and whether there were any connections between Moscow and Trump's campaign.

Throughout his leadership, Mr Comey triggered a backlash from the Democratic party when he announced just days before the national vote that he was probing political contender Clinton's use of a personal email system. Charges against the candidate were not pursued, resulting in disapproval from conservative politicians as well.

Ongoing Accusations

The federal government allege James Comey provided false information to Congress during a congressional hearing in recent years when he was being examined about both the previous examination as well as the election interference investigation. They say he provided false information to the legislative body by stating he had not approved someone at the Federal Bureau of Investigation to disclose to journalistic entities details about the FBI investigations.

Legal representatives also accuse Mr Comey of "corruptly endeavoring to influence, hinder and impede" the committee by providing untrue information to it.

Public Statements

In a video the former director shared to his social media after he was charged, he said he was wrongly accused and charged the former president of acting like a "autocrat".

"We have understood for years that there are consequences to challenging Mr Trump," he commented. "We choose not to live on our knees."
"I have done nothing wrong," he added. "Thus initiate a trial."

These allegations against Mr Comey came after Donald Trump published on social media calling for his chief prosecutor, the attorney general, take legal action against the former director and additional individuals.
