Nintendo Switch 2 Gets First Major System Upgrade Full with Useful Features

The Nintendo Switch 2 has received its first major system upgrade, release 21.0.0, and while there isn't anything completely game-changing, there are many convenience upgrades to be enthused over.

New Game Card Icons Bring Clear Identification

Among the prominent features features fresh symbols that appear above a software cartridge, identifying whether that title is an original Nintendo Switch edition, Switch 2, or online edition.

This enhancement is being favorably regarded by users, with many praising it as a "welcome detail" that assists give the interface seem more interactive.

Enhanced User Discovery and In-Game Communication Features

When searching for players to connect with, the Search for Users You’ve Played With option under Connect with Others now includes people you've interacted with in your pals' chat sessions.

Regarding GameChat, various upgrades are implemented:

  • The game won't enter sleep mode on its own when using chat.
  • A feature to turn off “Chat Audio Panning” was added.
  • Chat will persist if the system switches from TV mode to Handheld or flat mode, including when this situation results in the internet changing from a ethernet setup to a untethered one.

Streamlined Downloads and Gamepad Audio Modes

When installing various titles at once, you can now stop all downloads with a single tap.

With Switch 2 Pro gamepad owners, a fresh fast-response audio option is included, enabling you to select between “Stable” or “Low Latency” settings.

Low Latency will reduce audio latency relative to “Stable” but might be more susceptible to problems in some untethered setups.

Digital Title Information Acquisition Upgrade

Another key enhancement allows you to download data for a digital title if the “Use Online License” feature is turned off.

This feature is found in the Menu of a virtual game card when opened via Digital Titles from the HOME Menu.

Extra System Improvements

Apart from these headline changes, the patch brings various additional refinements:

  • Ease of access changes: Audio narration now reads auto-complete symbols on the Japan layout, and the voice tempo maximum setting got raised from 300% to 400%.
  • Screen options: Enhanced contrast has been retitled to “System Screen’s HDR Output,” and display calibration is simpler to set up.
  • Alerts improvements: The setting "Platinum Point Notification” has been retitled to "Nintendo Switch Online Notification."
  • Console features: Power handling features “Stop Charging Around 80-90%” replacing the former “Stop Charging Around 90%” option.
  • Language options: Thai and Poland's language were added to the selection of supported options, but they can only be accessible in titles that support the respective tongue.
  • General performance enhancements to boost the user's experience.
