Significant Internet Disruption Impacts Dozens Online Platforms and Applications
A widespread online disruption has affected many websites and mobile apps worldwide, as users experiencing troubles connecting to the web following issues at Amazon’s web hosting system.
The disrupted services comprise Snapchat, Roblox, Signal, and the language learning app Duolingo, as well as multiple Amazon-operated operations like its primary shopping site and the Ring doorbell device manufacturer.
In the UK, Lloyds bank was affected along with its affiliates Halifax and the Scottish bank, with additional accounts of difficulties accessing the the tax authority website on that morning. Additionally in Britain, multiple Ring customers used networks to report their doorbells were failing.
Just within Britain, notifications of disruptions on specific apps totaled the thousands for each platform.
Officials confirmed that the problem started in the eastern region of the United States at Amazon Web Services, a unit that supplies essential web framework for a host of firms, who lease capacity on AWS infrastructure. Amazon Web Services is the most extensive online services service.
Just after the start of the day (PDT) in the US (8 in the morning BST), the company announced “higher problem frequencies and slowdowns” for the cloud services in a region on the eastern US of the US. The ripple effect was seen to affect platforms globally, with the outage tracking website reporting problems with the identical platforms in various regions.
Cisco’s Thousand Eyes, a platform that reports on internet outages, also reported a surge in issues on that morning, including several cases found in Virginia, the location of Amazon’s US-East-1 region where officials confirmed the problems originated.
