England's football governing body has sent operational staff to the United States this week to look at potential facilities for the forthcoming global finals, amidst growing worries that their top-pick base could be allocated by the Dutch national team.
Draw Complications Change Arrangements
Head coach Thomas Tuchel had previously approved an FA plan for England to set up camp in Kansas after a warm-up training camp in Fort Lauderdale. Yet, following last week's tournament draw, there are now fears that the Netherlands, who have their group games in Kansas, will be awarded priority on the chosen facility at Sporting Kansas City—a state-of-the-art centre used by US Soccer.
The world governing body assigns training camps according to geographic location and world rankings if there is competition, with the draw potentially pitting the FA in competition with the Netherlands and Argentina for sites in the tournament's south-central region.
Considering Other Locations
With England's group stage matches set to take place in Dallas, Boston, and New Jersey, the FA is now understood to be investigating other options on the eastern seaboard. The FA started its search for training camps at the beginning of the year, with Tuchel and technical director John McDermott visiting possible sites during the Club World Cup last summer.
Despite this early preparation, there was always an acceptance that the official tournament draw could significantly alter their logistical arrangements.
Later Round Logistics Strategy
The Three Lions have the eighth most demanding group stage draw in terms of travel distance. Winning Group L would set England on track for a last-32 game in Atlanta, followed by possible last-16 match in Mexico City.
